How to work out the quantity of the materials we need for the flooring?

“Can you arrange a free site inspection and quote?”
Of course we can. We are willing to visit you in your property, show you samples, check the sub floor condition, measure the dimensions of the rooms, and offer a firm quotation.

But that’s for supply and installation. For those clients who need supply only, you have to work out the total quantity of the floor boards you need for flooring by yourselves. Here is the example below.

The big area is 7.32m by 8.54m; the small area is 1.82m by 4.12m.

7.32×8.54 = 62.52 SQM
1.82×4.12 = 7.5 SQM
Total Area: 62.52+7.5 = 70.02 SQM
5% installation wastage: 3.5 SQM

So we need about 73.52 SQM floor boards for this project and also same amount of underlay.

Besides, we may need about 46 meters of beading or skirting and about 4 meters aluminium trims for the door way.

How to check the planeness and smoothness of the subfloors for floating flooring?

Before we start to lay floor boards, especially floating floor, the first thing we should check is whether the subfloor is in the good condition for flooring.

Sometimes when we remove old, dinky carpet, we find the subfloor which was covered by carpet is uneven. We want to do a DIY job. But we are not sure if the condition is suitable to lay a floating floor on it.

Here is the easy way:

To check the planeness of the subfloor surface: When a straightedge 1.5 m  long is placed on the surface at any direction, no part of the surface shall be more than 6 mm below the straightedge.

To check the smoothness of the subfloor surface: When a straightedge 150mm long is placed on the surface at any position, no part of the surface shall be more than 1 mm below the straightedge.

Of course if the condition is just a little bit worse than the condition described above, we still can lay the floating floor on it, because using compound leveling to make a perfect subfloor is so time consuming and expensive, especially to some old rental properties. Usually when we do the site inspection and quote, we can roughly tell if the subfloor is OK for the floating flooring.

How much time does it take to install laminate flooring?

When we quote flooring jobs to our clients, one of the most asked questions is how much time does it take to install laminate flooring.

Laminate flooring is one of the easiest and quickest flooring methods. Then, how much time should we plan for it in our decoration process?

Well, it really depends on the size and difficulty of the job and how skillful are the layers who install the laminate flooring. But normally for professional two workers team, up to 60 square meters 2-3 bedrooms apartment or house can be completed in one day. Of course, there are many other conditions which should be considered. Is the sub floor ready for flooring? Is there any existing floor covering like carpet or floor tile need to be removed before we start installing? If the condition of the sub floor is really bad for flooring, another day is needed to prepare the sub floor by using compound leveling material, which will cost a lot extra as well. If there are a lot furniture in the rooms, workers have to spend much more time to move them around. So we strongly suggest our clients organize their valuable items and furniture themselves before we start to install.  We are always willing to help if some clients (seniors) really have trouble to do it.

The time also depends on difficulties of the job. Big areas, like living rooms, dinning rooms, are easy to install, while small areas like hall way and wardrobes are harder. One simple rule to judge: more doors involved, more difficult to install and more time is needed.

We should also consider the floor boards which are to be installed. If they are 8mm thick laminate floor, 50-60 square meters should be easy. 12 mm thick laminate will take some longer time.
